This culture was named the "Saltovo-Mayatsk Culture" after the ancient settlement of Mayatsk, within the borders of present-day Saltov, Ukraine, and the Russian Federation, where the first archaeological findings belonging to the Khazar Khaganate population were unearthed.

Archaeological findings of this culture, which emerged as the western extension of the Gokturk Empire, show that it bears traces of ancient Turkic culture extending from the steppes of Eastern Europe and Kazakhstan to Siberia and the Altai.
