From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, which we can call the last period of the Ottoman Empire, Greek expansionism had reached its peak and they had put into action plans to seize all of the Aegean islands.

The first island they targeted was Crete, the largest island in the Aegean.

They were encouraging and inciting the Greeks living on the island and were planning to expel and kidnap the Turks living on the island.

The most effective of these provocations was the daily provocations carried out by the Patriarchate of Ioannina Church on the island, which they tirelessly ensured were carried out in all the churches.

The Greeks of the island, caught up in these provocations, began to rebel from the 1880s onwards.
